Young employee

Young Person (16-19 years old) participating in part time training alongside full time work.

Structures have been created for the following trades:

· Fire Protection Installers

· Dryliners

The young person will be employed full time by a construction company and receive part-time training to be pursued alongside full time work. This will lead towards a relevant regulated qualification in Construction. The young employee will be working towards their NVQ L2, through the accredited centre, Cano Training Services Ltd who work closely with the employer.

Throughout their time at the company, the young employee will obtain a trainee CSCS card (paid for by the employer) allowing them to work onsite, receive on the job training by experienced construction workers of that trade, attend organised training sessions through the accredited centre and once competent gain an NVQ L2 in their trade. On completion the employee will then be able to apply for a skilled worker CSCS card.

The expected timeframe for a young employee to achieve an NVQ Level two will be 18 months approximately.

Below is a bullet point basic structure that the young employee would follow from start to finish:

1) Young person to sign employment and training Agreement with employer

2) Company induction for young employee

3) CITB Health, Safety and Environment Test, this must be sat to test basic knowledge of health and safety as well as environmental matters relevant to the work

4) If test is passed, young employee to register at Cano Training Services Ltd for the NVQ L2. This will include full induction to the NVQ by Cano Training Services

5) Employer to apply for the Trainee CSCS Card (this is valid for 5 years) on behalf of the young employee

6) Start onsite with assigned mentor from employer, using the NVQ Standards from the unit structures as guidance to what the young employee should be working towards, and recording hours on a daily basis

7) Over the expected time period of 18 months, the young employee will need to do at least 280 hours of training per year. This will need to be recorded and counter signed by the young employee’s line manager/mentor. These hours can be on the job training. Please use the unit structures as guidance and as a diary

8) The young employee should have regular appraisals with employer, to see how they are getting on and also to make sure they are meeting expectations. These should also be recorded

9) During the first year of employment, Cano Training Services will carry out training sessions with a designated assessor, lasting for three hours per session. There would be four sessions in total, giving the young employee a greater understanding of the unit. A Q&A session will follow each session and will go into the young employee’s NVQ portfolio. This will all count towards their NVQ L2

10) Also over the period of the estimated timeframe Cano Training Services will carry out one-to-one reviews with the young employee. There will be a review every three months by the centres Internal Verifier. These reviews will then be fed back to the employer

11) An NVQ Assessor from Cano Services Training will come out and visit the young employee to see how they are getting on and after six months if the young employee is ready they can start assessing for the different units needed to gain the full NVQ

12) Although the validity of the Trainee CSCS card is 5 years, the employer would expect the young employee to compete the NVQ within 18 months

13) Once the NVQ is achieved and certificated the young employee will be able to apply for a skilled worker CSCS card
